Does Booking.com refund the difference if the price drops?
Short answer: usually not automatically. But there is a simple workaround that gets you the lower price anyway. Here is how it works.
You booked a room on Booking.com, then noticed the price went down. Naturally you want to know: will they just refund you the difference?
Most of the time, no. Unlike a few retailers that have automatic price-drop refunds, Booking.com does not generally credit you the difference on a standard reservation just because the rate fell. There is no "we noticed it got cheaper, here is your money back" button.
But that does not mean you are stuck paying the higher price. You almost always have a way to get the lower rate. It just takes a couple of minutes of your time instead of an automatic refund.
The workaround: cancel and rebook
If your reservation is a free-cancellation rate (most Booking.com rates are), you can simply rebook at the new lower price and cancel the old one. The hotel does not care that it is technically a new reservation. You end up in the same room for less.
The order matters, so here is the safe sequence:
- Search the same hotel and dates on Booking.com again and confirm the lower price is real
- Book the cheaper rate. You now hold two reservations, which is fine
- Wait for the new confirmation email
- Cancel the original booking, while it is still inside its free-cancellation window
Do not cancel first. If you cancel and the cheaper rate disappears while you are rebooking, you could lose the room. Book first, confirm, then cancel.
How to tell if your rate qualifies
Open your Booking.com confirmation and look for "Free cancellation before" with a date. If you see it, you are free to rebook up to that deadline. If your rate says "Non-refundable," cancelling will cost you, so the workaround does not apply.
What about Genius prices and member rates
Booking.com often shows different prices depending on whether you are signed in, your Genius level, and the device you are on. If you booked while logged out, try searching again logged in. Sometimes the member rate alone is lower than what you originally paid.
The hard part is noticing
The workaround is easy. The catch is that Booking.com is not going to tell you the price dropped. You have to check yourself, and you have to do it before your free-cancellation deadline passes. Miss the window and the lower price does you no good.
That is the whole reason a price tracker exists. Preyio watches the exact room you booked across Booking.com and more than 50 other sites, and emails you the moment a lower price shows up, while you can still act on it. You add the booking once, we handle the watching, and you do the two-minute rebook. First three hotels are free, no card.
Quick recap
Booking.com will not refund the difference on its own. But if your rate is refundable, you can rebook at the lower price and cancel the original, ending up in the same room for less. Book the cheaper rate first, always. And since nobody reminds you when the price drops, set a reminder or let a tracker do it for you.
Frequently asked questions
Does Booking.com refund the difference if the price drops after I book?
Generally no. Booking.com does not automatically refund the difference when a rate falls. If your reservation is free-cancellation, you can rebook at the lower price and cancel the original to get the same room for less.
How do I rebook a cheaper Booking.com rate safely?
Book the lower rate first so you hold two reservations, wait for the new confirmation email, then cancel the original inside its free-cancellation window. Never cancel before the new booking is confirmed.
How do I know if my Booking.com rate is refundable?
Check your confirmation for the words Free cancellation before, followed by a date. If it is there, you can rebook up to that deadline. If it says Non-refundable, cancelling will cost you.
Why did my Booking.com price change after booking?
Hotels reprice rooms constantly based on demand and remaining availability. Prices can also differ by whether you are signed in, your Genius level, and your device.
